arrested in an expanding drug corruption probe. a cal tran passenger beaten on a peninsula platform. what police are learning about the attack. we started out with sunshine, then the clouds rolled in and now the rain is here. how heavy it will get overnight. good evening, i'm annette. another arrest in a police corruption case in contra costa county. a police deputy is facing conspiracy charges tonight. don knapp says local authorities are not elaborating. >> the arrest of a contra costa county sheriff that works as a danville police officer comes as investigators continue to look into alleged police corruption in a state narcotics enforcement team. district attorney, mark peterson told cbs 5 that steven was arrested friday night. the sheriff's office in a press release said he was arrested for possession and transfer of

an assault rifle and conspiracy to possess and sell controlled substances. peterson would not comment. the drug task force commander. welsh was arrested last month on charges on taling drugs from police lockers and passing them to private investigator, christopher butler who helped sell the drugs. seen in custody in court, and butler on the right are charged with more than two dozen felony counts with allegedly stealing and selling methamphetamines, marijuana, and prescription drugs and steroids. the san francisco chronicle says all three men work together in the antioch police department in the late 90s. the sheriff in a press release said the arrest of deputy tanabi is a sad day, but should not reflect on the professionalism of the 1,000 other members of the office. this evening, the deputy put up a $250,000 bond and

released from the jail. because of his arrest, the sheriff says he is pulling his office out of the on going drugs and police corruption investigation. we'll hand everything over to the district attorney and the state department of justice. thank you very much. well security is stepped up tonight at a peninsula caltrans station where a passenger was nearly beaten to death. transit police say the man was waiting for a train at the redwood city station last night when as many as 15 people attacked him and tried to rob him. tonight, the 47-year-old victim from san jose is in critical condition. >> this is a very unusual incident for cal tran. this is not something that is really outside the norm of the experience. people that are waiting for cal train have every reason to feel safe and comfortable while they are at the station. >> no one has been arrested. transit police are

investigating leads. tonight the guardian angels are walking the streets of san francisco's mission district. two people have died in six shootings and three stabbings in the last two weeks. the guardian angels have been patrolling the area two days a week, but starting today, that increased to four days a week. some rain heading our way this weekend. let's check in with lawrence carter. >> we have rain drops out there right now. you look at the doppler radar. it looks pretty impressive, but really a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. not all of it is hitting the ground. we are reporting light showers down towards san jose and you may pick up moderate amounts of rain fall. we don't have a real good trigger. you need instability in the atmosphere. we aren't seeing that yet. still, the moisture is making its way in along parts of the peninsula and the north bay getting showers. we could see over an inch and a quarter in north bay and the santa cruise mountains.

overall, this is not the biggest storm we have seen. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. back to you. checking other bay area headlines, reames of pg and e documents are piled up. dating back decades about its pipelines. the search centers on discrepancies between pg and e's claims and what investigators found in the wake of this san bruno explosion. they ordered pg and e to produce documentation by march 15. employees are working around the clock, sifting through tens and thousands of boxes. it was an i tunes purchase that left to criminal charges at a south bay school. trace elementary clerk was arrested last week accused of stealing more than $50,000 from the parent teacher organization. a second woman is still being

spied. she spotted a $16i tunes purchase that led to the discovery of more unusual charges and the missing money. and barn owl eggs has been rescued from a construction site. yesterday workers spotted an adult flying away and called authorities because migratory birds and eggs are protected by law. wild rescue moved the eggs to a special incubator. the construction crew will build a new nest for the parents. >> unemployment is up across the bay area. a state report says between december and january, jobless numbers rose between .1 and .3 in five counties. in solani county, the rate is 12.4%. in san francisco, 9.5, 8.2% in alameda county. and santa clara county, 10.5%. the nation's jobless rate fell to 8.9%. when it comes to jobs, bay

area is looking at this. san francisco's port as a center piece of recovery. ann says some fear a bustling waterfront will bring more than just jobs. >> also we invest in infrastructure, dredging, etcetera, we are missing the boat. >> with the port of san francisco as the backdrop, local leaders talked about bringing jobs and more federal money to shore. >> i think we need to treat the corpse as if they are like airports, because you know, airports, when you have a delay in their modernization and construction, it stops the economy of our country from moving forward. >> you may remember the carnival splen da here last month, getting repair after breaking down in the ocean last year. that work created hundreds of local jobs. this is the largest dry dock on this side of the pacific ocean. it's sitting empty right now.

a lot have trouble getting in here. >> the canal only has about 19 feet of water to accommodate bigger boats, it has to be dredged. >> if we are not dredging deep enough, we're missing an opportunity for commerce and for jobs. >> but there are environmental concerns. >> there's now a biological concern that as we might start seeing algae bloom, what are the biological impact of that? >> it will all be done with the best technology available and it will happen soon. >> it has to be happen now. it has to happen in the next couple of months. >> in san francisco, ann, cbs 5. it's a dog fight over parks and national park service wants to limit jobs and dog owners, not happy. they say complaints that off leash dogs are dangerous are exaggerated. >> people who don't own dogs

and don't care anything about dogs can see that if dogs have their designated area, then they can enjoy the rest of the other 99% of open space in the sphafn san francisco bay area. >> those who prefer to join a dog-free experience, we need to hear from everyone. >> advocates are planning a protest tomorrow at port mason. public information, and on april 14. another important issue to dogs and their masters. today, san jose posted -- today's event raised more than $3600. the goal is $10,000. the fundraiser runs through this month at all free cases. the battle over libya grows more deadly. how the government and rebels

high deaf moisture picking up all the moisture. but really just a lot of the moisture spreading through the atmosphere. no real trigger to get it all the way from the ground. light showers in toward fremont, as you make your way up. you have later amounts. that will be headed toward danville and some of the heavier mounts right now. they will heap inch and a quarter police across the mon tan pikes. it looks like it will continue to move through overnight. got to get this area of low pressure to trigger some of that rain outside. the temperatures, it's mild out there. this is a warm storm. a lot of subtropical moisture out there. temperatures in the mid and upper 50s around the bay area. if you plan on traveling tomorrow. be very careful. rain on up through redding and a lot of high country. we are looking at a mixture of rain and snow.

we have winter weather advisories, expect snow and rain. by monday that turns into snow. hey, lots of powder to ski on nothing to worry about in the next coastline. >> pumping all the moisture. tomorrow morning will see the heaviest amounts of rain fall and tape ires back as we look toward the afternoon. computer models picking up on the heavier amounts of rain fall and by tomorrow morning, that lower protein, that's when we start things picking up. it starts to scoot on out of town. looking forward to the afternoon. things will taper off just a bit and squeeze in a couple sunny brakes. temperatures are going to play mild, some 50s and maybe some 60s for highs today. we could see a leftover shower on monday, come tuesday, we

california should be proud. we were the first to ban smoking on airplanes. the first to have smoke-free bars and restaurants. all while saving over $86 billion in health care costs... and over a million lives. we've done a good job. but even if you were born today, you'd still grow up in a world where tobacco kills more people... than aids, drugs, alcohol, murder and car crashes... combined. we have a lot more work to do.
